In preparation for the municipal elections scheduled for January 29, 2025, the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan continues its educational program, targeting various election stakeholders with different projects.
According to Azernews, a seminar on the registration process for candidates in the municipal elections was organized on December 19 as part of this extensive program. This initiative, which involves working groups under district election commissions to verify the accuracy of information in the signature sheets and accompanying documents submitted for candidate registration, has traditionally been implemented and has significantly contributed to improving their operations. The most recent such event was held during the parliamentary elections in the country.
Given these considerations, the current seminar focused on the dynamic and intensive phase of candidate nomination and registration for the municipal elections, addressing various relevant issues and practical scenarios encountered in the process.
The seminar began with an opening speech by Rovzat Gasimov, Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission. In his speech, he highlighted the continuous and systematic educational projects carried out by the Commission, emphasizing their importance in preparing for high-quality, free, fair, and transparent elections. Gasimov also reminded the participants of the significant responsibility borne by the working groups under the district election commissions in ensuring the effective exercise of citizens' passive electoral rights, as enshrined in the Constitution. He stressed the necessity for these groups to strictly adhere to legal requirements in performing their duties.
Following the opening remarks, the agenda included presentations by Commission members on the ownership and realization of passive electoral rights in municipal elections, the legislative basis and procedures for candidate registration, and the practical aspects of the working group's activities and experiences. These presentations, supplemented with visual aids, provided participants with detailed information on the topics.
The practical part of the seminar continued with extensive discussions and a Q&A session on various issues related to the nomination and registration of candidates in the municipal elections.
The seminar, widely covered by media representatives, saw the participation of the heads of the working groups under each of the 118 district election commissions conducting the municipal elections. These groups are responsible for verifying the accuracy of information in the signature sheets and accompanying documents submitted for candidate registration.
