Azerkosmos hosts COP29 session on data-driven climate decisions
Within the framework of COP29, a session on "From Space to Earth: Making Data-Based Decisions in Changing Climate Conditions" was organized by the Azerbaijan Space Agency, "Azerkosmos." The event was moderated by Vugar Bayramov, Adviser on International Relations at "Azerkosmos," Azernews reports.
The session addressed the issues of increasing the availability of climate services and improving their effectiveness to achieve sustainable development goals.
Frank Martin Seyfert, Earth Observation Application Engineer at the European Space Agency (ESA), stated that ESA monitors 27 types of climate change and plans to expand its meteorological missions. He noted that the agency’s database is available to everyone free of charge. Referring to the latest report by the World Meteorological Organization, he emphasized that 2015-2024 is the hottest period in recorded history.
Ruth Kattumuri, Director General of the Department of Economy, Youth, and Sustainable Development, highlighted the important role of "Big Data" and space research in mitigating climate change. She stressed the need for innovative information technologies to analyze large datasets.
Academician Ali Abbasov, General Director of the Institute of Management Systems at the Ministry of Science and Education of Azerbaijan, emphasized that artificial intelligence, "Big Data," and machine learning play crucial roles in climate data analysis and decision-making.
Ismat Bakhishev, Director of the Geoinformation Systems Center at "Azerkosmos," noted that the institution has joined the UN Global Compact to minimize its environmental impact. He also highlighted that satellite data is an effective tool for reducing the effects of climate change on agriculture and water resources.
At the end of the session, participants’ questions were answered, and further discussions took place.
