Sabina Aliyeva, the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, took part in a significant side event at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), Azernews reports.

The event, titled “Using Human Rights Frameworks to Promote Global Adaptation Goal Inclusion and Implementation in Africa,” was organized by the Azerbaijan National NGO Forum in collaboration with the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA).

During her address, Aliyeva underscored the crucial need to strengthen cooperation among regional networks of national human rights institutions. She emphasized that integrating human rights approaches into climate change initiatives is vital for ensuring inclusive and equitable adaptation efforts, particularly in vulnerable regions like Africa.

The Ombudsman also made a series of proposals aimed at fostering joint initiatives to address the impacts of climate change while safeguarding human rights. Her suggestions included strengthening regional and global cooperation to enhance the effectiveness of climate adaptation policies through a human rights lens.

This side event is part of broader efforts at COP29 to highlight the intersection of human rights and climate justice, particularly in the context of adaptation and resilience building in the face of climate change.
