Turkiye's economic vision reflects on target to reach net zero emission by 2053
In his speech at the COP29 summit in Baku, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan extended his congratulations to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for successfully hosting the event, Azernews reports.
"I especially congratulate my brother President İlham Aliyev for his sincere efforts in organizing this successful event," Erdoğan said. "In such a meaningful formation, we are among the countries where the negative effects of the climate crisis are felt most intensely."
Erdoğan emphasized Turkiye's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2053, aligning key sectors with green development strategies. He highlighted Turkiye’s significant progress in renewable energy, noting that the share of renewable energy in Turkiye’s total installed capacity has reached 59%. This achievement positions Turkiye as the 5th in Europe and 11th globally in renewable energy.
Looking ahead, Erdoğan outlined Turkiye's ambitious energy goals, including increasing wind and solar energy capacity from 31,000 MW to 120,000 MW by 2035. Additionally, Turkiye aims to have 20,000 MW of nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The country also has a national energy efficiency action plan for 2024-2030, which is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 100 million tons.
Erdoğan also highlighted the national zero waste initiative, led by First Lady Emine Erdoğan, which has already prevented 5.9 million tons of carbon emissions. He emphasized the importance of water efficiency and national afforestation efforts, noting that Turkiye plants millions of saplings every November 11 as part of its dedication to environmental sustainability.
