Speaking at COP29, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called for a climate finance target to support developing countries in their fight against climate change, Azernews reports.

"I believe that a climate finance target that will respond to the needs of developing countries, in particular, will be determined at this summit," Erdoğan said. "This will make our global fight stronger and more effective."

Erdoğan also emphasized the economic challenges of climate action, acknowledging the high costs involved in Turkiye’s efforts to combat climate change. He pointed out the importance of international cooperation, noting Turkiye’s adoption of the Future Pact at the 79th United Nations General Assembly to build a just, sustainable world for future generations.

In his speech, Erdoğan also addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine, Israel, and Greece, describing the attacks as both a human and environmental disaster. "The chemicals leaking into the soil and groundwater due to Israeli attacks have already darkened the future of children," he said, calling for accountability in international courts for those responsible for these environmental and humanitarian crimes.

In closing, Erdoğan reiterated Turkiye's bid to host the 2026 United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP31).

"We thank the countries that supported our candidacy and look forward to the support of those whose evaluations are ongoing," he stated.

Erdoğan concluded his remarks by congratulating Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev once again for hosting the summit, calling it an important step toward global climate action.
