UN Secretary-General calls for "Emergency Emissions Reductions" at COP29
UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a powerful message at the opening of COP29, warning that the world is rapidly running out of time to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, Azernews reports.
Speaking at the World Leaders' Climate Action Summit, Guterres emphasized the urgency of the climate crisis, pointing to 2024 as likely to be the hottest year on record and a clear example of climate destruction.
"The clock is ticking," Guterres said, urging governments to take immediate and drastic steps to cut emissions. He called for a 9% annual reduction in global emissions, with a target of reducing them by 43% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. He also underscored the need for carbon markets that are fair and effective, ensuring that climate action does not come at the expense of vulnerable communities.
With the backing of scientific research and global public opinion, Guterres pushed for new economy-wide national climate action plans that align with the 1.5°C target. He stressed that the G20 nations, as the largest emitters, must lead this charge, bringing technological innovation and support to emerging economies.
"Only you can beat the clock on 1.5 degrees," Guterres concluded, calling on leaders to deliver concrete actions that will limit further environmental devastation.
