Science and Education Ministry reveales topics to be discussed within framework of COP29
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), hosted by Azerbaijan, will feature discussions on green education, environmental literacy for students, the role of education in combating climate change, and other related topics in events organized in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Education, Azernews reports.
On November 18, panels on "Greening Education and Climate Resilience" and "Measuring Environmental Literacy within International Assessment Frameworks" will be organized in partnership with the COP29 Presidency, the Ministry of Science and Education, UNESCO, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). These panels will include education ministers from various countries. The second annual meeting of the "Greening Education Partnership" initiative, launched by the UN in 2022 and joined by over 90 countries, is also planned to take place during COP29.
The panel on "Measuring Environmental Literacy within International Assessment Frameworks" will discuss an initiative proposed by the Ministry of Science and Education for assessing students' climate literacy through the International Student Assessment Program (PISA). The Ministry, together with the OECD, has suggested developing a competency-based measurement and assessment framework for climate literacy as part of the next PISA assessment in 2029.
The panel on "Greening Education and Climate Resilience" will focus on creating a discussion platform on how education systems can be made more climate-resilient. In cooperation with UNESCO, the Ministry of Science and Education will facilitate discussions on preparing students to be climate-resilient. This conversation will address key components such as schools, curricula, student knowledge and skills measurement, and teacher training.
It should be noted that education has been given special importance in the agenda of the COP29 session, which is being held in Azerbaijan. One of the discussion topics, the inclusion of climate literacy indicators in PISA assessments, is an initiative by Azerbaijan aimed at increasing climate awareness within the education systems of various countries.
