COP29 opens with high optimism in Azerbaijan, emphasizing action on climate change
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has officially kicked off in Azerbaijan, marking a new chapter in global climate action, Azernews reports.
At the opening ceremony, Sultan Ahmad Al-Jaber, President of COP28, expressed confidence in the upcoming session’s success. "Our actions should be stronger than our words, and we should show ourselves with our actions," he stated. Al-Jaber called for global unity, urging nations to come together in a collective effort for a sustainable future. "Let's be united 'for the sake of a green world,' as Azerbaijan says in its slogans. Let's cooperate and partner together. We must have the will to work on a topic like climate change."
In a symbolic gesture of leadership transition, Al-Jaber also officially handed over the chairmanship of COP to Azerbaijan, setting the stage for the country's role in steering the next phase of climate negotiations.
The event, which brings together world leaders, policymakers, and experts, highlights the importance of strong, action-oriented commitments in the fight against climate change.
In addition to the ceremonial handover of the COP chairmanship to Azerbaijan, a key focus of COP29 is the adoption of a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Target (NCQG) on climate finance. This target is expected to play a central role in advancing global climate goals by ensuring adequate financial support for developing nations and addressing the climate crisis in a just and equitable manner.
Azerbaijan's leadership has also brought forward 14 key initiatives aimed at bridging climate action with sustainable development goals. These initiatives include efforts to develop green energy corridors, green energy storage solutions, clean hydrogen technologies, and methane reduction from organic waste. Other priorities include advancing green digital solutions and fostering greater harmony for climate sustainability.
