Presidents of Marshall Islands and Tuvalu arrive in Azerbaijan for COP29
The President of the Marshall Islands, Hilda Heine, and the Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Feleti Teo, arrived in Azerbaijan on November 9 to attend the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Azernews reports that Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Farid Gayibov, along with other officials, welcomed the dignitaries at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, where the national flags of both countries were displayed in honor of their arrival.
It should be noted that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan in a few days. The decision to host the event in Azerbaijan was made during the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 last year.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement established in June 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, aiming to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. "COP" stands for the "Conference of the Parties," the highest legislative body overseeing the convention’s implementation.
A total of 198 countries participate in the convention, which is generally held annually unless the parties decide otherwise. The first COP was held in Berlin in March 1995, and its secretariat is based in Bonn, Germany.
