US senator due on visit
US Republican Senator Sam Brownback will hold talks with Azerbaijani officials during a visit to Baku that starts Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
Khazar Ibrahim told reporters that the senator would meet with the Azerbaijani foreign minister during the visit.
Brownback is known for his pro-Azeri position and is an active lobbyist of Azerbaijan's interests in the United States. He is the author of the 1999 Silk Road Strategy Act which envisions support for rehabilitation of the historical Silk Road going through Azerbaijan.
After the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, the US lawmaker drafted a law which empowered the US president to suspend Section 907 to the Freedom Support Act that bans direct US assistance to the Azerbaijani government.
The bill was submitted to the Senate in October 2001. President George Bush approved the suspension of Section 907 since 2002 and the decision remained in force in the following five years.
