The creation of the intersections of the major international North-South and East-West transport corridors will be especially aided by the opening of transportation channels between the western parts of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through the territory of Iran or Armenia, Azernews reports.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk made this statement at the plenary session "Logistics of change: the transformation of supply chains and transport and logistics flows" of the International Export Forum "Made in Russia - 2022".

"The crossroads of the main international transport corridors North-South and East-West are being formed in the South Caucasus. If it is created, the economies of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia will begin to receive additional rent associated with the advantage of their geographical position in Eurasia. A significant role in this connection will be played by the unblocking of transport communications between the western regions of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through the territory of Armenia or Iran," he said.

Overchuk noted that today Azerbaijan and Iran have begun construction of bridges on the border, which will connect the roads of the two countries and allow for the shortest and most convenient movement between the western regions of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan. At the same time, the construction of a railway and a highway through Armenia's Meghri depends on Armenia.

He also highlighted that Azerbaijan and Iran have started building border bridges today, which will link the two nations' roadways and enable the quickest and most practical travel between the western areas of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan. The location of Armenia itself will determine whether a railroad or a motorway be built via Meghri across Armenia.

"A route that would bypass Armenia is already being constructed through Iran; it will be completed in 2024 and will give access to the markets of Iran, Turkey, and beyond Europe. The infrastructure for the North-South international transport corridor currently exists to a great extent and supports both road and rail transit, but it must be updated and expanded in order to handle the anticipated growth in traffic volumes," Overchuk explained.
