By Vafa Ismayilova
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has inaugurated the newly-renovated 500/330/220 kV Absheron substation, Azertag reported on August 9.
As part of the inauguration ceremony, AzerEnergy Open Joint Stock Company President Baba Rzayev informed the head of state that the substation supplies electricity to Baku and most of the Absheron Peninsula.
The substation launched by President Aliyev includes four largest thermal power plants of Azerbaijan - the Azerbaijan thermal power plant, the Sumgayit, the North and the South power plants. It also includes the Mingachevir hydroelectric power station, the Sangachal and the Gobu power plants, the Khachmaz module power plant. Thus, this substation is the only junction connected to such large generation sources.
During the renovation, the substation's 500-kV and 330-kV open switchgear equipment was renewed, its area was expanded, and a new 220-kV open switchgear was built.
The control centre was also built and equipped with modern facilities. To monitor the substation's operation in the real time and transfer the indicators to the AzerEnergy's SCADA system, a local micro-SCADA control system was established and the power system was integrated into the central SCADA system.
Thus, the substation's management is fully digitized. At the same time, the central SCADA system was installed in the control room as a full backup option. Thanks to the substation's renovation, its capacity was increased, the reliability and durability of electricity supplies were improved, losses were reduced and innovative solutions meeting modern standards were applied.
One of the projects on the agenda is the construction of a new 330-kV Derbent-Absheron line parallel to the existing Yashma-Derbent line in Russia. In this regard, the substation was expanded.
