CE reviews monitoring group’s report on Azerbaijan
A Council of Europe committee on Wednesday discussed a report
submitted by the Ago monitoring group of the CE Committee of
Ministers based on the conclusions made by its representatives
during their visit to Azerbaijan in late November 2009. A relevant
document was adopted, according to Azerbaijan’s representation to
the CE.
In the document, the group welcomes progress in Azerbaijan’s enforcing its commitments, in particular, in bringing the country’s legislation into compliance with CE standards.
At the same time, the Ago group, closely following the restructuring reform pursued by the Azerbaijani authorities, suggests furthering the process and working toward improvements in such key areas as election laws and freedom of expression and the media, an independent judiciary, anti-corruption combat, and local self-administration.
The Ago group’s report also contains a separate provision dealing with the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper Garabagh.*
