President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan have discussed Azerbaijan's victory the 44-day war to liberate lands from Armenia's occupation in 2020 and Turkey's support during the war, Azertag has reported.

At a meeting held in Baku on April 2, Pekcan extended Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s greetings to the head of state. President Ilham Aliyev thanked for the greetings and asked the minister to extend his greetings to the Turkish President.

Saying Turkey is proud of Azerbaijan’s achievements, Ruhsar Pekcan added that the Turkish people closely followed the events in Azerbaijan and President Aliyev's activities during the Patriotic War, and that rejoiced in the successes achieved.

The head of state added that he had always felt the support of the Turkish people, saying that the Turkish public stood by Azerbaijan during the Patriotic War as well.

He highly appreciated the important statements made by Erdogan from the very first day of the war. President Aliyev pointed to the activities of the Turkish media in the Patriotic War and hailed its special role in disseminating news about the war in the world.

Saying he had received many letters of support from the Turkish public both during and after the war, the head of state described it as another manifestation of unity between the two countries.

At an informal summit of the leaders of the countries participating in the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States held in the format of a videoconference on March 31, Aliyev once again thanked Erdogan for his political and moral support. He said that the new Zangazur corridor to be laid as part of the Karabakh peace signed by the Azerbaijani, Russian and Armenian leaders on November 10, 2020, will unite the Turkic world through transport, communication and infrastructure projects passing along the region.

Since 1991, Turkey has been a staunch supporter of Azerbaijan in its efforts to consolidate its independence, preserve its territorial integrity and realize its economic potential arising from the rich natural resources of the Caspian Sea. The two countries share an 11-kilometre border, with the Araz River separating Turkey from Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan exclave.

Turkey and Russia are represented with an equal number of servicemen in the joint centre to monitor the situation in and around Nagorno-Karabakh under a trilateral peace agreement signed by Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia on November 10 to end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh.
