Cases of illegal felling of trees have significantly decreased in Azerbaijan over the past three months, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Firdovsi Aliyev said at a press conference on October 11.

He noted that 61 trees were cut down in Baku without permission, 98 trees were damaged for the six months this year.

As many as 59 offenders were fined for 71,800 manat ($42,185), causing damage in the amount of 23,745 manat ($13,951), the deputy minister stated. Appeals were sent to the police to find those responsible for 40 facts and to take appropriate measures in accordance with the law.

“For comparison, it i noted that 12 trees were cut down and 14 trees were damaged over the past three months. The figures give grounds to say that illegal cutting of trees has significantly reduced in the past three months,” Aliyev pointed out.

The deputy minister added that, despite the taken measures and educational work, the cases of illegal cutting of trees have not been completely eliminated.

“As the head of state noted at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, there are fewer cases of tree felling, but they have not yet been completely eliminated,” he said.

The ministry will continue to take tough measures and decisive steps to completely eliminate cases of tree felling.

In addition, it is planned to install cameras in the forests of Azerbaijan, at the entrances and exits, Aliyev added.
