Azerbaijan, Poland ink three papers after leaders` talks
Azerbaijan and Poland signed three documents on
Thursday at the conclusion of talks between President Ilham Aliyev
and his counterpart, Lech Kaczynski, in Baku.
The papers included the bylaws of the Consultation Council of the
two countries` presidents, Azerbaijan`s state-run news agency,
Azertag, reported. Also, Rovnag Abdullayev, President of the
Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR, and Pawel Olechnowicz, Chief
Executive of Lotos, Poland`s second biggest oil refiner, inked a
letter of intent covering joint oil production and refining.
Further, Chief-of-Staff of the Azerbaijani Presidential
Administration, Secretary of the Security Council, Ramiz Mehdiyev,
and Polish Minister of National Defense, Aleksander Szczyglo,
signed a schedule of cooperation for 2009 and 2010 between the two
countries` national security agencies.
During the talks between Presidents Aliyev and Kaczynski, the
parties expressed their satisfaction with the development of
bilateral relations in the political, economic, cultural and
humanitarian fields, stressing the importance of these ties in
terms of cooperation within the European Union. It was noted that
the Polish leader`s visit to Baku represented a new stage in taking
Azerbaijan-Poland relations to a higher level.
According to President Aliyev`s decree, the Polish leader was
conferred with the order named after the national leader, the late
President Heydar Aliyev, for his outstanding work in the expansion
of friendly relations and collaboration between the two
countries.
`Azeri integrity a must`
As President Kaczynski received the Heydar Aliyev Order,
Azerbaijan`s top award, following talks with his counterpart, Ilham
Aliyev, he said preservation and restoration of Azerbaijan`s
territorial integrity should be ensured in settling the country`s
conflict with Armenia, the state-run news agency, Azertag,
reported.
"Certainly, I am for a peaceful solution of this problem. But, in
fact, settlement of this issue must be only as follows: the rights
of minorities must be observed while providing for the preservation
and restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
"Personally, I have no doubts on this issue. Violation of any given
country`s territorial integrity with the use of force is
unacceptable. No one should act under the flag of even the most
powerful patron. I know that this problem emerged exactly this
way," Kaczynski said.
President Aliyev, for his part, pointed out that his Polish
counterpart has always advocated for the principles of resolving
the Garabagh conflict in line with his country`s integrity, and
thanked him on behalf of the Azerbaijani people for his
support.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the
signing of a ceasefire in 1994, but Armenia continued to occupy
Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of
international law. The OSCE-brokered peace talks have been
fruitless so far.
