ANS TV reporters claim police violence
Employees of the Baku-based ANS TV channel were beaten by police while reporting a news story, they claim.
One of them, Nijat Suleymanov, said that on Sunday evening ANS reporters had received information about the demolition of a mosque located in the capital. Further, a group of reporters arrived at the scene and taped the demolition work. Suleymanov said that having seen a large number of police officers there, he approached the Yasamal district police chief, Mohubbat Huseynov, for an interview.
"He refused to do so. I also saw that they were trying to take the camera away from our operator. We objected to this, after which the police hit and kicked us," Suleymanov claimed.
Interior Ministry spokesman Ehsan Zahidov said the incident was being investigated and statements were being taken from ANS employees. "Whether or not a criminal case is to be started depends on the outcome of the investigation," he added.
