Azerbaijan`s pastry now in book of records
A huge piece of delicious Pakhlava, the national
Azerbaijani sweets, has been cited in the books of records of
Russia and the entire Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The
pastry, which is 12 meters long and four meters wide, was cooked by
seven local pastry-makers at the urging of the Mayor`s Office of
Ganja, Azerbaijan`s second largest city.
The piece was sliced during an event held with the participation of Alexei Svistunov and Igor Khimtsov, who represented the regional book of records, and was then distributed among the public in Ganja on the eve of the forthcoming Novruz Holiday.
This type of sweets is traditionally found on Azerbaijanis` tables during the holiday, which is marked with plenty of national pastry and various activities every year.
Svistunov, who acts as editor of both books, said he had never tried such a huge and tasty Pakhlava.
"I would say that this pastry is a record, not only in Azerbaijan but the whole CIS. This record is quite extraordinary for the entire world as well. I have never had such delicious Pakhlava."
This year`s Pakhlava sample is bigger than the one displayed last year, which was nine meters long and three meters wide, and was, therefore, heavier. The three-ton piece was divided into 25,000 slices. A variety of products were used to cook it, including 7,000 eggs, 350 kilograms of walnuts, 25 kg of nuts, 20 kg of almonds, 350 kg of granulated sugar and 350 kg of flour.
