Refugee problems in focus of Baku talks

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the problem of refugees and IDPs were the main topic of a meeting between Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs, Fuad Huseynov and Member of the European Parliament, Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) Vice-Chair Lara Comi in Baku.
Huseynov highlighted root causes of the conflict, its current state, refugee and IDP problem in the country, and the successful state policy towards tackling the problem, Azertac reported.
Huseynov said that the military aggression of the Armenian armed forces against Azerbaijan resulted in the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories.
“More than one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs. The UN Security Council adopted four resolutions demanding the immediate liberation of the occupied Azerbaijani territories, return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their homelands,” he said.
He also praised friendly relations with the Government of Italy in various fields, and stressed the importance of arranging such visits and reciprocal visits for further development of bonds.
Comi, in turn, praised measures taken by Azerbaijan`s Government in improvement of life of IDP and refugees.
During her Baku visit, Comi also visited the Parliament of Azerbaijan.
She met with Speaker Ogtay Asadov, who expressed confidence that Comi’s visit will give an impetus to the development of bilateral relations between the European Parliament and Azerbaijan`s legislative authority, as well as between Italy and Azerbaijan, Azertac reported.
He hailed Azerbaijan-Italy ties, saying they reached the level of strategic partnership.
