Malta attaches great importance to cooperation with Azerbaijan, said Maltese President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca as she received Baku’s Ambassador Mammad Ahmadzadeh.
The Azerbaijani ambassador with a residence in Rome presented his credentials to Malta’s president.
During the meeting, the Azerbaijani diplomat noted the intensification of cooperation between the two countries in recent times.
Further, the sides mulled prospects of cooperation and it was noted that Malta, during its chairmanship at the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2017, can contribute to Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the EU.
As part of the visit to Malta, Mammad Ahmadzadeh also held a number of other official meetings.
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Malta was established in January 1995.
The trade turnover between Malta and Azerbaijan amounted to $142 million in 2015, and almost the entire amount accounted for the exports to Malta, according to Azerbaijan's State Customs Committee.
Azerbaijan's trade turnover with Malta totaled almost $13.3 million in the first quarter of 2016, which is almost twice more than in January-March 2015.
