Three Azerbaijani judges - Kamalya Abiyeva, Latif Huseynov and Rovshan Ismayilov will represent the country in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) said on September 7.

The names of these judges are listed in a letter sent to PACE Secretary General Wojciech Sawicki by the ambassador, permanent representative of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe, Emin Eyyubov.

The European Court of Human Rights is an international court set up in 1959. It rules on individual or state applications alleging violations of the civil and political rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Court monitors respect for the human rights of 800 million Europeans in the 47 Council of Europe member States that have ratified the Convention.

The Court is currently made up of 47 judges, one in principle for every State signed up to the Convention. They are elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and serve for six years. Judges sit on the Court as individuals and do not represent their country

Azerbaijan ratified the European Convention on Human Rights on April 15, 2002, as well as, the additional protocol abolishing the death penalty.

Azerbaijan became the 43rd member State of the Council of Europe on 25 January 2001.
