MPs' visit to Karabakh does not reflect Mexico's position, ambassador says
By Rashid Shirinov
The trip of Mexican diplomats to the territories of Azerbaijan occupied by the Armenian armed forces does not reflect the official position of the Mexican government on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Mexican Ambassador to Azerbaijan Juan Rodrigo Labardini Flores told APA on October 26.
Earlier, Hikmat Hajiyev, the spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, said that the illegal visit of Mexican MPs Blanca Margarita Cuata Dominguez, Maria Cristina Teresa Garcia Bravo, and Carlos Hernandez Miron to Azerbaijani lands occupied by Armenia is under investigation, and the Azerbaijani Embassy in Mexico received relevant instructions in this regard.
Labardini said that the Mexican government learned about the visit only after it took place.
“Mexico stands for a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which has been going on for a long time. The position of the Mexican government on this issue is very clear. We urge Armenia and Azerbaijan to resolve the conflict through the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs,” Labardini said.
He added that the Mexican government supports the settlement of the conflict within international law, as well as the implementation of relevant UN resolutions.
“These resolutions imply compliance with the ceasefire in the conflict zone, respect to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, and we are supporters of this,” the diplomat said.
The ambassador also noted that the Mexican government took control over the situation with the trip of its MPs to the occupied Azerbaijani territories.
Unauthorized visits to Nagorno-Karabakh and other regions of Azerbaijan occupied by Armenia are considered illegal, and any individuals paying such visits are included in the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's ‘black list.’ The Ministry and diplomatic missions pay special attention to the illegal activity in the occupied areas of the country.
Baku has repeatedly warned foreign officials and diplomats of illegality of visits to its territories that are occupied by Armenia, calling them contradictory to international law. The work is constantly carried out to prevent such illegal actions.
