Sustainable carpets highlight climate challenges at COP29 in Baku

Sustainable carpets, crafted with themes addressing global climate challenges, were showcased at the COP29 climate event in Baku, which began on November 11, Azernews reports.

The unique collaboration between the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company and Azerkhalcha OJSC features carpets made from eco-friendly materials and dyes, emphasizing both Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage and its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Displayed in the Blue and Green Zones of the Baku Olympic Stadium, the carpets were handwoven by Azerbaijani women artisans at Azerkhalcha OJSC’s Shabran workshop. This initiative not only supports the economic empowerment of women from remote regions but also provides a platform for them to share powerful messages about climate change through their craftsmanship.

One notable piece, "Woven Stripes," draws inspiration from Professor Ed Hawkins' Show Your Stripes project, which visually represents global temperature changes from 1850 to 2022. The design incorporates the silhouette of Azerbaijan and iconic Baku landmarks, underscoring the urgency of addressing rising global temperatures while celebrating Baku’s role as the host city for COP29.

Another striking carpet, "From the Shore to the Knot," symbolically reflects Azerbaijan’s declaration of 2024 as the Year of Solidarity for a Green World. The piece contrasts a peaceful seascape with the stark reality of pollution, using waste collected from shorelines as part of the design to highlight the environmental damage caused by human activity.

These artworks combine traditional craftsmanship with a powerful environmental message, encouraging greater awareness of climate change and the vital role of cultural heritage in addressing global challenges.
