Carpet Weavers’ Day marked in Baku [PHOTO]

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, one of the most modern and popular museums in Baku, opened doors to a fairy-exhibition of carpets on May 5.
Museum director, chairman of ICOM Azerbaijan Shirin Melikova, Head of the Cultural Institutions and Folk Art Department at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Fikret Babayev and others addressed the event that was dedicated to Carpet Weavers’ Day – May 5.
The speakers stressed that through the efforts of the state, Azerbaijan’s traditional art of Azerbaijani carpet weaving has been included into UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
They also stressed that President Ilham Aliyev signed an order in November 2016 on the establishment of a professional holiday “Carpet Weavers’ Day” to honor weavers of Azerbaijan's enchanting and vivid carpets.
This year Azerbaijan celebrated Carpet Weavers’ Day for the first time.
Azerbaijan Carpet Museum hosted a series of events devoted to the contemporary carpet art, such as exhibition, workshops and conference on May 4-5.
Various issues, including today’s development of carpet art and its current problems and solution ways; research and promotion of the forgotten weaving techniques and passing them to the future generation; provision of carpet weavers with raw metarials; preservation of specific characteristics of each region in the period of globalization, etc were discussed at the conference.
The craftswomen were awarded with diplomas.
Furthermore, guests enjoyed fairy-exhibition that featured works of weavers from all corners of the country
