UN Resident Coordinator highlights urgency of climate action as COP29 countdown begins
In her interview with journalists at COP29, UN Resident Coordinator Vladanka Andreeva emphasized that, with just 10 months left to prepare for the world's biggest annual climate gathering, the momentum is building, with 76 registered participants from across the globe, Azernews reports.
The UN Resident Coordinator expressed her excitement about the growing engagement, noting that the event presents a crucial opportunity for world leaders to elevate climate action.
In her remarks, Andreeva highlighted the need for COP29 to deliver ambitious results in three key areas: mitigation, adaptation, and financing.
Quoting UN Secretary-General António Guterres, she underscored the urgency of the climate crisis.
"Climate action is not an option; it's an imperative," Guterres had stated during the opening of the Leaders' Summit. "Climate finance is not a charity; it's an investment." The Resident Coordinator expressed her hope that negotiators at COP29 would heed these calls and take decisive action to address the climate emergency.
Azerbaijan, as a key player in this global conversation, has already made its position clear during the COP29 discussions. When asked how the country has sent its message to the world, the UN Resident Coordinator stressed that Azerbaijan's stance reflects the undeniable reality of the climate crisis.
"The message is very clear: the climate crisis is here, and we all share the responsibility to act," she said. "The next two weeks will be a critical time for negotiators to have candid discussions about how we can collectively ensure that we save this planet for future generations."
