Barmek boss gets two years in jail
The president of Turkish electricity supplier
Barmek, which halted its operation in Azerbaijan in 2006, has been
sentenced to a jail term.
Huseyn Arabul, a Turkish national, was convicted to two years in prison by the Grave Crimes Court in Baku on Friday.
Arabul and five others had been charged with bribery and attempting to illegally cross the border.
Barmek operated Baku`s electricity networks along with the country`s third largest city, Sumgayit, from 2001-2006. In September 2007, Arabul was handed down a five-year suspended sentence after being accused of embezzling state property, and he was forbidden to leave Azerbaijan during this period.
According to the indictment, the Turkish businessman tried to illegally leave the country for neighboring Georgia several months ago. Arabul has denied the charges.
Abbas Atakishi, Arabul`s lawyer, claims his client`s actions did not amount to a crime and the trial was unfair, adding that the defense would appeal the verdict.
``The court failed to prove wrong any reasoning of the defense,`` said Atakishi.
