More companies benefit from 'green corridor'
By Nigar Abbasova
The green corridor system, which was introduced in Azerbaijan in 2016 to facilitate customs procedures, is growing in popularity.
As of late 2016, some 9 companies used the system for the carriage of goods and transport facilities through the customs border, State Customs Committee head Aydin Aliyev said while addressing a conference dedicated to the results of the state program on socio-economic development of Azerbaijani regions' in 2014-2018.
Aliyev mentioned that two of these companies were added to the list of users through intermediary of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham).
In late 2016, the sides signed a MoU on cooperation and promotion of use of the green corridor and other gating systems for the transportation of goods and vehicles across the customs border for AmCham member companies.
The document was signed for a period of one year. Under the MoU, the Committee is obliged to inform the companies about the terms and conditions of use of the “green corridor”, while AmCham member companies are obliged to hold trainings and seminars to expand the use of the system.
The main objective of establishing the green corridor is to apply the simplified customs procedures and provide for customs payments.
Talking about certain violations within the system, Aliyev said that some businessmen try to evade taxes setting prices low during export-import operations.
However, he mentioned that the frequency of such cases has reduced recently. He noted that the Committee established a working group, which compares prices using Internet and stock data.
