The Azerbaijani-Russian interregional forums have become a good tradition, Polad Bulbuloglu, Azerbaijani ambassador to Russia, said.

Bulbuloglu made remarks at the opening of the 7th Azerbaijani-Russian Interregional Forum, which is being held in Baku on November 1.

"We are very pleased that this important area of our cooperation, cooperation with the regions of the Russian Federation, is being successfully developed,” the ambassador said. “It has become one of the most important and essential components of the strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia."

“It is important that as of January 1, 2016, Azerbaijan signed 36 agreements with 19 Russian regions,” he said.

The diplomat added that Azerbaijan and the Russian regions have already created successful formats of developing the relations in different spheres.

“Baku considers it appropriate to approve the draft agreement, taking into account the specificity of each region to further maintain and develop the Azerbaijan-Russia relations,” he said.

“Today, success is mainly determined by the ability to adapt to the new conditions, by finding new ways of cooperation,” Bulbuloglu said.

“One of the most promising projects of cooperation is the North-South large-scale transport project, which will connect the Russian ports to Asia and the Indian Ocean,” the ambassador said, adding that the project will open new prospects of cooperation among Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.

“The implementation of the project will contribute to the financial stability of all participating countries in general and those Russian regions, through which the route will stretch,” the ambassador said.

“The friendly cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan is doomed to succeed,” he said.

The North-South corridor is meant to connect Northern Europe to South-East Asia. It will serve as a link connecting the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.

It is planned to transport five million tons of cargo via the North-South corridor per year at the initial stage and later to increase the figure to more than 10 million tons.
