Games of the eighth round of the 42nd Chess Olympiad were played at the Baku Crystal Hall on 10 September. The press service of the Baku Chess Olympiad reports that the Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva, visited the playing hall and observed some games.
First Leyla Aliyeva met with the President of the Internation Chess Federation, FIDE, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, and discuss the progress of the Olympiad.
The FIDE President praised the level of organization of the Olympiad in Azerbaijan. He said great attention was being paid to the development of sports in general and chess in particular in Azerbaijan.
Answering questions from the media, the Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation said the good performance of Azerbaijani chess players in the Olympiad would enhance the popularity of this sport in the country. Leyla Aliyeva noted that the establishment of chess schools throughout Azerbaijan was a manifestation of the attention being paid to the development of chess. The Olympiad hosted in Azerbaijan will also contribute to the promotion of chess, she said.
Then Leyla Aliyeva reviewed the exhibition hall of the Olympiad.
The Director of the Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee and Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, Mr. Mahir Mammedov, explained that spectators of the Olympiad also have the opportunity to see an exhibition featuring rare items related to chess, posters of historic competitions, etc. Visitors of the exhibition can also play a virtual game of chess with anyone they want.
