Diaspora may turn off "money tap" for Armenia

By Jamila Babayeva

Armenia's newly formed government cannot meet the expectations of the Armenian diaspora which is still one of the main economic and political supporters of the authorities.

Armenian diaspora expressed dissatisfaction with the new cabinet of ministers and will reconsider future cooperation with the new ministers.

"The new cabinet is even worse than the previous one, which was able to destroy thoroughly the economy," President of the Forum of Armenian Associations of Europe Ashot Grigoryan told local media.

He said the forum had great expectations, but none of them were met. "We linked all our investment programs in Armenia with the formation of the new government," Grigoryan noted.

He added that the new government is a misfortune for the Armenian people. "There is no one in the new government we can rely on."

Armenian diaspora had accused several time the homeland's authorities of misusing the financial aid. The expatriates believe that the Armenian authorities do not spend public funds in a proper way.

"The representatives of the Armenian authorities and government buy new expensive cars which are used just for the needs of their families," the diaspora said recently.

Local experts said the oligarchs' government has been formed in Armenia. "Armenian oligarchs will not face any problem, as their positions have been strengthened even more," they said.

It's no secret that diaspora supports the entire authorities and the state power would hardly desire to lose it. In this case the new ministers will have either "struggle" with oligarchy or get deprived of a bulk financial source.
