The South Caucasus is once again at the center of geopolitical attention, this time due to EU High Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen’s remarks in Samarkand outlining the EU’s vision for connectivity in the East-West direction. Von der Leyen highlighted the importance of routes that would involve the opening of the Armenia-Azerbaijan and Armenia-Türkiye borders. This was quickly seized upon in Yerevan as a sign that Armenia could become the EU’s preferred regional partner—despite structural, geographic, and political limitations.
