Silk Road rise: How Azerbaijan’s Railways driving Middle Corridor? [ANALYSIS]
Azerbaijan is rapidly positioning itself as the linchpin of Eurasian logistics, with Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) reporting that more than 210 block trains from China have arrived via the Middle Corridor this year alone. With over 300 expected by the end of 2024, the growth is a testament to the revival of the ancient Silk Road—this time through the modern arteries of rail transport, with the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway at its core.
An agreement between ADY and Chinese companies supports the transport of Chinese-origin goods through container block trains on the BTK line. “The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line, which was commissioned seven years ago today, has significantly strengthened the role of Azerbaijan in regional and global cargo transportation over the past years,” the company emphasized.
Launched exactly seven years ago, on October 30, 2017, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) line has evolved into a vital route for freight between China, Türkiye, and Europe. Built to create an alternative to Russia’s Northern Corridor, this line is not just a trade route—it’s a lifeline for global companies seeking efficient, geopolitically safer routes across continents. For Azerbaijan, it has cemented its role as a strategic transit hub, connecting East and West.
ADY's collaboration with Chinese logistics companies enables seamless cargo movement through container block trains on the BTK line. The impact is clear: the uninterrupted flow of Chinese goods through Azerbaijan reflects a deepening economic partnership and robust infrastructure, even in the face of global uncertainties.
With over 210 block trains already crossing Azerbaijan in 2024 and the prospect of 300 by year’s end, the BTK railway embodies more than just logistical efficiency—it symbolizes Azerbaijan’s emergence as a critical player in the future of global trade. The reopening of the Georgian section and the promise of transporting 5 million tons of cargo annually underscore Azerbaijan’s growing influence at the heart of the Middle Corridor.
Although facing some certain holdbacks and challenges, such as following the repair of the Georgian part of the BTK line. However, as soon as the line reopened, it demonstrated its potential once more. Azerbaijan Railways anticipates that cargo transportation will increase to 5 million tons annually, positioning the railway line as one of the most attractive and strategic routes within the Middle Corridor. As goods flow across borders and industries depend on uninterrupted trade routes, Azerbaijan’s strategic role in connecting China and Europe will continue to grow. What started as an ambitious infrastructure project has now become a beacon of modern trade—one that proves, in a changing world, the strength of connection remains constant.
