Police becomes stronghold of corrupt Armenian government
By Rashid Shirinov
The armed attack on the police station in Erebuni district of Yerevan in July 2016 has revealed a lot more than just public discontent with the policy of the Armenian leadership. Poor economic situation, political chaos and other sad Armenian realities have been revealed following the July events.
Chairman of the National Press Club Narine Mkrtchyan noted that the violence committed by the Armenian police and criminal elements against the defenseless citizens that took place in Yerevan on the night of July 29 indicates that within 25 years of Armenia's independence its police not only failed to be an ally of the society, but even became its punisher and the stronghold of the corrupt Armenian government.
Hundreds of cases of police brutality, who used batons, stun grenades and other weapons against the population remain out of Armenian government’s sight. The government uses every opportunity to suppress the population in its resentment actions, no matter how, she said.
“Armenians do not believe the oaths of public officials and civil servants, do not trust the police, and internally despise and fear them,” she said. “For Armenian society, a policeman is the person solely carrying out punitive functions, the stronghold of the illegal authorities, apologist of violence, but not the partner of the society.”
Political analyst Levon Margaryan, in turn, believes that no matter how much the mistakes of the authorities are discussed in the society – they simply do not react, and live their lives separately from the Armenian population.
“Thus, Armenia's oligarchy found a new entertainment. Jaded rich people come up with new idea to compete with each other. In particular, keeping animals or killing them now widely spread among them.”
Recently, Armenian media reported about such a case- son of the former Governor of Vayots Dzor province, member of Prosperous Armenia Party Sergey Bagratyan for several days kept a bear in a barred gazebo in front of his house.
With a view to be safe, the great “lover” of animals resorted to a very ingenious step – he removed all teeth of the bear.
“Would Bagratyan be so wealthy now if this method in due time was applied to himself?” wonder Armenian journalists. But the authorities just do not care, thinking that if they have money they can do whatever they want. And the Armenian population continues to suffer from that.
