Georgia to build three new power plants
By Jamila Babayeva
Three new hydroelectric power plants will be constructed in Georgia.
Large-scale Alpana and Sadmeli hydroelectric power plants will be among them, Georgian Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze said after a government meeting on January 27.
"A tender was announced for a 230-megawatt hydroelectric power plant on the Rioni River," he said. "Turkish company Chalik Energy won the tender. The feasibility study must be prepared within 12 months."
Kaladze said the second project is Mestiachala envisaging the construction of a 27-megawatt hydropower plant on the Inguri river.
"The volume of investments will hit $39 million. The feasibility study must be also prepared within 12 months. The Bank of Georgia won this tender," he added.
Kaladze noted that the local business has recently intensified and this is appreciated by the government.
He mentioned about the meetings held as part of the economic forum in Davos and stressed that power engineering is an interesting area for investors.
"This is very encouraging," he said. "We will do everything for Georgia to become an energy-independent country in the near future."
