Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iranian
president Hassan Rouhani and Russian president Vladimir Putin will
be meeting in Kyrgyzstan on the sidelines of a regional summit
Rouhani and Putin will meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai
Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Mehr reported. Zarif said
that Rouhani and Putin will discuss regional issues as well.
Iran, along with Afghanistan, India, Mongolia, and Pakistan, has an
observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The
regional body is an intergovernmental security organization that
was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Speaking further about the nuclear talks between Iran and 5+1
group, Zarif noted that the group must use its political will
within the framework of Iran's nuclear rights.
"The international community should recognize the peaceful
intentions of Iran's nuclear program officially," Zarif said.
The U.S. and its Western allies suspect Iran of developing a
nuclear weapon - something that Iran denies.
The Islamic Republic has on numerous occasions stated that it does
not seek to develop nuclear weapons, using nuclear energy for
medical researches instead.
