Uzbekistan finalizes copper mine expansion project

By Trend

Uzbekistan’s Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AMMC) has completed a project worth $75.2 million to expand its main source of raw material – the Kalmakyr copper-porphyry deposit.

The project envisaged involving the non-registered (extra-balance) ores of the quarry, making it possible to increase the volume of ore processing by 4 million tons annually and bringing the total copper enrichment capacity of the AMMC to 40.2 million tons per year, the company reported.

Russia’s Tyazhmash JSC was the contractor of the project and supplier of the main technological equipment.

The project was financed with a $28 million loan from the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan, as well as loans of Uzbek banks and the equity of the AMMC.

The AMMC is the only copper producer in Uzbekistan. Kalmakyr and Sary-Cheku deposits of copper-porphyry ores in Tashkent province, Uch-Kulach deposit of lead-zinc-barite ores in Jizzakh province, as well as Khandiza deposit of polymetallic ores in Kashkadarya province are its raw material sources.

The AMMC produces refined copper, metallic zinc, lead concentrate and other products.
