By Sara Rajabova

It is necessary to increase the efforts of the international community for fair settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, MP Azay Guliyev has said.

Guliyev made the remarks at a meeting with the member of the German Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs, Vice-President OSCE Parliament Assembly, Doris Barnett on May 8.

He stressed the importance of creating an atmosphere of trust between the Armenian and Azerbaijani communities of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Guliyev also noted the importance of the meeting between representatives of the two communities and asked to support this initiative.

Barnett, in turn, spoke about the friendly relations between Germany and Azerbaijan and noted that parliaments are an important platform in the development of bilateral relations.

She also proposed to hold a meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian MPs.

Barnett further added that the German delegation consisting of 13 deputies will take part at the 23rd annual session of the OSCE PA.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions.

The UN Security Council's four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal have not been enforced to this day.
