Preservation of Syria’s current borders will be difficult: think tank head

The processes occurring in Syria are very complicated, and it is impossible to make assumptions about the future of the country, the Director of the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Azerbaijan Farhad Mammadov told Trend news agency.

According to him, the events in Syria took such a turn that the existence of this country in its present form is in doubt.

"In general, the preservation of Syria within its present borders will be very difficult, because there is no united opposition front, and the opposition consists of various forces. On the other hand, the confrontation in Syria has not a political, but a military nature. Under the conditions of military confrontation, the presence of its own forces in each city, the lack of legitimate government is impossible to predict the future scenario of events in Syria," Mamedov said.

The conflict between the government and the opposition in Syria continues since March 2011. According to various sources, 70,000 people have been killed; nearly half a million were forced to leave their homes during this period. Syrian authorities claim that they oppose well-armed trained fighters arriving from abroad. According to official Damascus, a number of armed groups are directly related to Al-Qaeda terrorist network.
